PS3 Linux distributions

There are more than few linux distribution from which you could choose if you want to try linux on your PS3. The world wide web is crowded with developers who got more than enough time to code that stuff.

Ubuntu

One of the easiest to use linux distributions. Latest version ( 9.10 ) has been ported to PowerPC system (PS3 runs on a processor based on PowerPC). Ubuntu packs itself with free software that we all know and like, for example Mozilla Firefox. If you are troubled while loading web pages, just cut the tail of that fox, it might help :) Ubuntu is a Debian distribution derivative, so it uses the same .deb format for packages and the same package manager: APT Package Manager. Ubuntu releases a new version of its distribution every six months (half of a year).

Fedora

Not all releases of Fedora are nice to your ps3, some of them just won’t work. For example the newest release Fedora 12 only installs to your PS3 when running on a 64 bit kernel and the language you chosen to install was english. Its better to use Fedora 10, which installs and works fine under all circumstances. You can install it to your internal hard disk and just be happy about it.

OpenSUSE

OpenSUSE is free version of a widely known distribution SUSE Linux. The latest version (11.2) dropped support for PS3, so you have to choose from versions 10.3 or 11.1. You should go on with 11.1, because its newer and better and more improved and stuff like that…

Yellow Dog Linux

The Dog was the first one of the linux team to cooperate with the PS3, support for your console was added from version 5.0 and carried on to all later builds. Newest release as of writing this is 6.2. The Dog likes to follow his tail in HD resolution, so if you are SDTV user, you will need to use commands ‘installtext’ and ‘ydl480i’ to run installer in text mode and type lots of shits into the dark screen. Dog’s mother used to wear a hat, which color was red, so everybody called her Red Hat. Yellow puppy carries the same package manager as his mother, its called RPM package manager and it uses .rpm packages (they are most widely available in the net nowadays)

When choosing a distribution which you think may suit you, you don’t have to be super picky, because you can try them all, them all are free although. Download one, install, see what you like, if you dislike that shit – just put another one. Its just as simple as that. You got that right?
