Linux geeks were kicked out of Sony's playground
Linux on PS3 PlayStation 3 Linux PS3 Linux
Sony released a new firmware (3.21) for PS3 which removes posibility named "Other OS". That means that from firmware 3.21 PS3 users can't install linux no more. Sony said that decision to kick out Linux geeks from company's playground was due to security concerns and removing "Other OS" option will make the whole system more stable. PS3 system or Sony's marketing system? Because when users have posibility to install any OS they want, they can install any software and any data they want. That removes Sony from posibly interrupting unwanted content, for example warez. Illegal games makes the company to lose money, because who will buy a game when you can get it for free over the internet? But should we, linux users, who want more from any hardware we have be satisfied that Sony left us with a gaming computer? When they released the computer they told it can be used as a regular PC. And it was possible. Plug your USB keyboard and mouse, install decent linux operating system and you have a decent media center, not just a big bulky game boy.
Those who still have a 3.15 or older firmware on their PS3 have a possibility not to upgrade, but that leaves you in the pile of shit, because you won't be able to:
- Access PlayStation Network
- Play new games or Blu-ray movies that require new firmware.
- Play copy-protected content from media servers
If you choose to upgrade your PS3 and you have Linux installed - do a back-up, because you will lose all of the data that you have
